There are several "alternative" recovery support organizations. Programs such as RR, SMART, and SOS (see below) advocate complete abstinence and have self-help groups but differ from 12-step programs mainly in that they are based on therapeutic principles which do not emphasize spirituality as part of recovery.
RR (Rational Recovery) makes use of what it calls the Addictive Voice Recognition Technique (AVTR). A tutorial on this technique is available at their web site.
SMART (Self Management And Recovery Training) uses a cognitive-behavioral psychotherapy called Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT) which is described at their web site.
SOS (Secular Organizations for Sobriety) explicitly takes a secular approach to recovery which while considering sobriety an individual responsibility, encourages the support of others as a vital adjunct to recovery. You may also want to check out LifeRing Secular Recovery.
WFS ( Women For Sobriety ) is another "alternative" program. It stresses the needs of women in recovery. It is a program that encourages both spiritual and emotional growth.
